Murphy Island Exploring

Today we decided to do a little exploring around the Island after lunch.

For a lunch snack before our hike I made ABT’s, which are a super-hot Jalapeno popper with habaneros in the fling. Look em’ up we love them.

I did something pretty dumb, after removing them from the grill I turned it up on high to burn off some of the drippings and crud. Well, I kinda forgot about it while we were eating. Next thing I know Heather looked out the window and noticed flames pouring out of the bottom of the grill and  telling me to get a fire extinguisher.

The bacon grease had collected in the drip pan with the grease from previous meals and set on fire. I got it put out before it set fire to the fiberglass. But I will surely clean the drip pan more often from now on and not leave it unattended.

After that eventful lunch we went exploring.

At about 5,000 Acres or so Murphy Island has a very diverse landscape. Near the water there are Palm, Cypress, Oaks and even Orange Trees.

I picked a few to eat, the one I tried was the sourest Orange I have ever eaten, only got through one slice. Felt like my gums were going to melt off. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Closer to the middle of the island it turns into a more scrub pine and palmetto forest.

Some of the trails in between these areas are covered in what seems to be a type of lichen. Very neat looking.

We have seen plenty of armadillos, a deer and opossum. We did not see any pigs this time but definitely saw their tracks and wallow holes.

We met this old possum who seemed mostly blind and probably deaf because he did not react at all to the dogs barking. This Island is probably a good place for him I don’t think there are any predators around.

At the South side of the Island the grade really dips down low, and it becomes somewhat like a jungle. We found this creature crawling around we decided to name it “TreeThulhu”

There is also an abandoned camp where it seems like someone had, at one time, been living here.

It is guarded by a hilarious sign that has seen better days but this is about what we can make out-

Sacred Indian Territory
White Man Must Pay Trade
Chief (two Illegible words) Chicken Wing

Whoever they were they picked the coolest tree around to live under.

Back to the boat!
